Did you know that the ECWAS (Economic Community of West African States) operates in three languages and that Portuguese is one of them? Did you know that Portuguese is the official language in six African countries, namely Angola, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, São Tomé and Príncipe and, since 2011, Equatorial Guinea? Have you considered that learning Portuguese can expand your career and academic opportunities not only in African but in South America (Brazil) and Europe (Portugal), where it is the official language?

In this course, we will introduce the basics of the Portuguese grammar and syntax. In addition, we will cover a variety of cultural and historical aspects of some Portuguese-speaking countries, as language is best learned in context. We will also learn a wide variety of cognates and reading strategies. Finally, we hope this introductory course will motive you continue studying Portuguese and develop your proficiency. 

The goal of this course is for students to be able to talk about the following topics in Japanese and to be able to read hiragana.

Lesson 3 Talking about Family

Lesson 4: Talking about breakfast

Lesson 5 Making a simple order at a restaurant

Lesson 6 Talk about the kind of house you live in

Lesson 7 Talking about a Day in the Life

Lesson 8 Talking about a Week in the Life

Since lessons 1 to 6 were taught in the previous semester（GST211）, lessons 1 and 2 and lessons 3 and 4 will be taught together. Students who have not yet learned these lessons need to review them by watching the class video and materials.

As for the assessment, CA is 30% and final exam is 70%.

The CA is a mid-term exam (10 questions, 20 points), attendance (10 points), and the final exam is 35 questions, 70 points. The mid-term exam will be made up from Lesson 1, Lesson 2, Hiragana reading, greetings and classroom expressions. The final exam will be made from Lesson 3 to Lesson 8. If you have any questions about the assessment, be sure to ask them before the exam. No questions or complaints will be accepted after the exam.

Faculty of Science - Tuesday, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m., Hall of the Faculty of Science

Faculty of Agriculture-Thursday from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. in the Hall of the Faculty of Agriculture or in an open classroom.

Faculty of Education, Law, Sociology, etc.- Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., Mini Campus

Faculty of Economics and Science, Faculty of Arts-ETS Hall on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Students from faculties not listed above should attend one of the classes listed above.

Online classes must be attended either on Thursdays from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm or on Saturdays from 8:00 pm to 9:00 pm.

(You don't have to attend twice, as the content is the same.)

The face-to-face class will focus on conversation and reading/writing, while the online class will focus on listening comprehension.

This course provides guidance on your studies of communication.
